My two double start pitchers Sanchez and Maholm pitched poorly. They didn't win a game or give me enough K's. I thought I benched Maholm on the weekend, but I must have not hit the summit button. I missed out on Paulino and he would have been a buy and hold at this point of the season. Contreras did get a win for me, but he didn't close any games. The best move would have been for me to keep Volstad. It was a mistake to driop him and I should have looked at the upcoming schedule. In these contest you can't make those kinds of mistakes if you want to win.

Saito, Takashi (SP,FP) RP, ATL No longer on active roster.
Moyer, Jamie (SP,FP) SP, PHI No longer on active roster.
Moore, Adam (SP,FP) C, SEA No longer on active roster.

Sometimes you win when you lose. Felipe Paulino was a good pickup as he gave me 19 K's in two starts. He didn't win a game even though he pitched well. Aaron Cook pitched poorly in San Diego so he wasn't worth holding for two starts at home. I won Kris Medlan because I missed on Contreras. He had a start last week and pitched ok. He needs to be stretched out to have more value. If he pitches well this week, he could keep the job and send Kawakami to the bullpen.

League 9-

$167 Young, Eric (2B,MI,U) 2B, COL Out bid, winning bid $342.00
Cabrera, Melky (2B,MI,U) RF, ATL No longer on active roster.
$126 Uribe, Juan (2B,SS,3B,MI,CI,U) 3B, SF Player awarded. Released: Melky Cabrera

$24 Contreras, Jose (SP,FP) RP, PHI Player awarded. Released: J.R. Towles
Towles, J.R. (SP,FP) C, HOU J.R. Towles released to make room for Jose Contreras
$24 Meek, Evan (RP,FP) RP, PIT Out bid, winning bid $29.00
Towles, J.R. (RP,FP) C, HOU No longer on active roster.
$7 Brignac, Reid (2B,SS,MI,U) SS, TB Out bid, winning bid $38.00
Cabrera, Melky (2B,SS,MI,U) RF, ATL No longer on active roster.

Juan Uribe didn't offer much this week, but he was a player I needed for this team. I've seem him dropped in a few spots and I have been surprised as he has played well. He should keep the job and offer power from short. I thought Jose Contreras would get a chance to close this week. Brad Lidge did look pretty good, but I'll keep Contreras for a couple of weeks and see if Lidge has any problems. I wish I would have pitched up Paulino in this league as Joe Saunders isn't worth rostering at this time.

WCOFF Magazine Draft

Posted by CC's Desperados, Apr 29 2010, 01:34 PM

I did my first WCOFF draft on Tuesday night. It was for the upcoming WCOFF magazine. I had the fourth pick and I took Ray Rice. In the early drafts I've seen the first six players are pretty consistent - Chris Johnson, Maurice Jones-Drew, Adrian Peterson, Ray Rice, Andre Johnson, and Frank Gore. It seems like the 7th pick is where all the decision making starts. In this draft Steven Jackson went 7th. After that pick, 14 of the next 16 picks were WR's. The other two picks were Aaron Rodgers and Pierre Thomas. What's even most interesting is those two players probably should have been drafted in the second round. When the real drafts roll around, the RB's should start moving back up. Here's the draft:

1) Ray Rice (RB) - I'm not sure if Boldin will steal some of his passes, but he is one Willis McGahee injury away from being considered higher.

2) Sydney Rice (WR) - I drafted him believing Favre would be back. He was the 13 receiver off the board.

3) Rashard Mendenhall (RB) - It's not very often that you get a top 10 back in the third round and he was the 10th RB taken. I thought he would get drafted higher, but his value has to be sliding due to Roethlisberger being suspended. Wouldn't that increase his value? The Steelers run more to protect a young QB or a questionable veteran.

4) Michael Crabtree (WR) -From what I've seen in the early drafts, he should get drafted in this area. He played really well when he came in. He will be a player of interest for many teams. The fourth round was made up of mostly RB's.

5) Felix Jones (RB) - Last year I wasn't in his camp at all. With no money on the line, he was worth a shot. If he is the starter, he will get drafted a lot higher than this. I can't say I love him, but he is player I need to keep an eye. He has some risk, but he has a high upside.

6) Julian Edelman (WR) - I can't complain about getting Wes Welker Jr. in the 6th. I don't believe Welker will have any value this season so I see Edelman improving and putting up solid catches every week. With any negative Welker news, his value will rise. He looks like the same kind of player, but I'm not sure he can handle all those catches without breaking down.

7) Ahmad Bradshaw (RB) - This was kind of a gamble. Last year he was getting drafted in the 7th. He's coming off a foot surgery and he could pass Jacobs on the food chain if he is a 100 %.

8) Eddie Royal (WR) - Two years ago Mr. Royal was getting drafted in this area of the draft without playing a down in the NFL. With Marshall out of town, he has to have similar or more value as his 2008 season. If that true, he is a deal in the 8th round. He is a player that will get drafted a lot higher as we get closer to the big dance.

9) Eli Manning (QB) - This was tricking spot for me. I wanted add another RB and push the QB back, but I though Eli could have a good year throwing the ball. His young receivers should improve. LaDainian Tomlinson almost made to me here. He went 9.1. Manning was the 8th QB off the board. He should get drafted around the 7th round this year.

10) Jonathan Carlson (TE) - I could have waited longer, but I thought the TE's started to drop off after Carlson. Carlson was a disappointment last year mainly because he was forced to block more due to a poor offensive line. With Burleson gone, he might move up the passing food chain.

11) Kevin Walter (WR) - He's coming off a poor year, but he is a pretty good fill in for bye week or injuries.

12) Ben Roethlisberger (QB) - When he comes back from his early season vacation, he might have something to prove. As a number two, he makes sense if you don't need him to cover an early bye week.

13) Alex Smith (QB) - With Roethlisberger on the team, I needed a 3rd QB just in case little Ben can't behave himself.

14) Tashard Choice (RB) - I needed some Felix Jones insurance.

15) James Davis (RB) - I'm not sure what to make of the Cleveland situation yet. Davis looked like he would get a shot before he got hurt last year.

16) Jermaine Gresham (TE) - He's a talented TE, but Cinci hasn't used a TE very much in the past in the passing game.

17) Lance Moore (WR) - He appears as the odd man out, but there is no risk in taking a New Orleans receiver this late. He was hurt all of last year. He could bounce back.

18) Josh Morgan (WR) - I guess he is insurance for Crabtree, but he could be a good fill in if the passing game improves.

19) Dallas (D) - They looked like the best on the board.

20) Dan Carpenter (K) - I have to say my kicking homework wasn't done before this draft. I saw some names that changed jobs, but I went for a steady leg on a possible improving team.

Volstad, Christopher (SP,FP) SP, FLA No longer on active roster.
Bush, David (SP,FP) SP, MIL No longer on active roster.

Jamie Moyer didn't pitch well, but he won one game. When I look back, I wish I would have kept Volstad. He's a decent young arm and I didn't look forward to see who he was facing. He pitched a complete game with 8 K's. I was concerned about upgrading my DH slot and added Clement as a player down the line on the free agent bids. It would have made more sense to not pick him up and hold onto Volstad. Scott Olson pitched well and won his only start.
League 6-

$212 Smoak, Justin (1B,CI,U) 1B, TEX Out bid, winning bid $343.00
Hellickson, Jeremy (1B,CI,U) SP, TB Did not need to be released.

$3 Narveson, Christopher (RP,FP) RP, MIL Out bid, winning bid $6.00
Padilla, Vicente (RP,FP) SP, LAD No longer on active roster.

Same here with Moyer. Adam Moore gave me another week of zero's from my number two catcher.

League 9-

$337 Smoak, Justin (1B,CI,U) 1B, TEX Out bid, winning bid $400.00
Hellickson, Jeremy (1B,CI,U) SP, TB No longer on active roster.

$9 Garland, Jon (SP,FP) SP, SD Out bid, winning bid $67.00

$8 LeBlanc, Wade (SP,FP) SP, SD Out bid, winning bid $43.00
Smith, Greg (SP,FP) SP, COL No longer on active roster.
$8 Cecil, Brett (SP,FP) SP, TOR Out bid, winning bid $16.00
Smith, Greg (SP,FP) SP, COL No longer on active roster.
$4 Gutierrez, Juan (RP,FP) RP, ARI Out bid, winning bid $37.00
Romo, Sergio (RP,FP) RP, SF Did not need to be released.

Ike David played ok, but Ortiz hit two homeruns. I hope Davis is worth the investment because it has caused a roster decision most weeks now. I'm not sure if Ortiz is done, but he isn't playing against lefties. Jeremy Bonderman didn't win either start and he was just ok. His fastball is barely 90 MPH now. He might help, but he is dangerous pitcher to use every start. Jon Garland would have been the best pickup. He won both starts.

It was an interesting free agent week. Ike Davis and Justin Smoak were the hot prospects to hit the free agent pool. I bid on both players in all my leagues, but my prices had different ranges. On most on my teams, I was looking for an upgrade at UT. In league 2, I should have went higher as I have problem. In League 6, I really didn't need either player, but I gave a token bid just in case. Either player would look better on my bench than someone else's lineup. In league 9, I have Ortiz or even an OF to play at UT. I wasn't sure if Ortiz is all done, but I figured it made sense to buy one and hope he could help this team.

WCFB Report Week 2

Posted by CC's Desperados, Apr 20 2010, 12:15 PM

League 2-

$69 Rodney, Fernando (RP,FP) RP, LAA Out bid, winning bid $206.00
Aceves, Alfredo (RP,FP) RP, NYY No longer on active roster.
$11 Perez, Oliver (SP,FP) SP, NYM Out bid, winning bid $12.00
Aceves, Alfredo (SP,FP) RP, NYY No longer on active roster.
$9 Garland, Jon (SP,FP) SP, SD Player awarded. Released: Alfredo Aceves
Aceves, Alfredo (SP,FP) RP, NYY Alfredo Aceves released to make room for Jon Garland
$7 Fister, Doug (SP,FP) SP, SEA Out bid, winning bid $13.00
Aceves, Alfredo (SP,FP) RP, NYY No longer on active roster.
$3 Guthrie, Jeremy (SP,FP) SP, BAL Out bid, winning bid $27.00
Aceves, Alfredo (SP,FP) RP, NYY No longer on active roster.
$2 Huff, David (SP,FP) SP, CLE Out bid, winning bid $15.00
Aceves, Alfredo (SP,FP) RP, NYY No longer on active roster.
$1 Westbrook, Jake (SP,FP) SP, CLE Out bid, winning bid $9.00
Aceves, Alfredo (SP,FP) RP, NYY No longer on active roster.

My one buy in this league worked out as Jon Garland pitched well and won his only start. The only negative was the one strikeout. He has double starts this week on the road. If he struggles, I might have to cut him.

League 6-

$31 Padilla, Vicente (SP,FP) SP, LAD Player awarded. Released: Freddy Garcia
Garcia, Freddy (SP,FP) SP, CWS Freddy Garcia released to make room for Vicente Padilla
$27 Navarro, Dioner (C,U) C, TB Player awarded. Released: Adam Moore
Moore, Adam (C,U) C, SEA Adam Moore released to make room for Dioner Navarro
$17 Eveland, Dana (SP,FP) SP, TOR Out bid, winning bid $31.00
Garcia, Freddy (SP,FP) SP, CWS No longer on active roster.
$14 Norris, Bud (SP,FP) SP, HOU Out bid, winning bid $56.00
Garcia, Freddy (SP,FP) SP, CWS No longer on active roster.
$13 Saito, Takashi (RP,FP) RP, ATL Player awarded. Released: Jensen Lewis
Lewis, Jensen (RP,FP) RP, CLE Jensen Lewis released to make room for Takashi Saito
$7 Fister, Doug (SP,FP) SP, SEA Out bid, winning bid $41.00
Garcia, Freddy (SP,FP) SP, CWS No longer on active roster.
$3 Huff, David (SP,FP) SP, CLE Out bid, winning bid $51.00
Garcia, Freddy (SP,FP) SP, CWS No longer on active roster.
$2 Silva, Carlos (SP,FP) SP, CHC Out bid, winning bid $51.00
Garcia, Freddy (SP,FP) SP, CWS No longer on active roster.

Vincente Padilla pitched ok with 8 K's, but he was put on the DL with a sore elbow. I thought I would get regular at bats from Navarro with Shoppach out for 6 weeks. Navarro got hurt and he might lose so playing time to his backup Jaso. I picked up Saito as insurance for Wagner. He had been pitching well. This week he gave up a couple of runs, but I think I'll need to hang onto him.

League 9-

$37 Cook, Aaron (SP,FP) SP, COL Out bid, winning bid $41.00
Willis, Dontrelle (SP,FP) SP, DET No longer on active roster.
$23 Medlen, Kris (RP,FP) RP, ATL Player awarded. Released: Jensen Lewis
Lewis, Jensen (RP,FP) RP, CLE Jensen Lewis released to make room for Kris Medlen
$14 Smith, Greg (SP,FP) SP, COL Player awarded. Released: Dontrelle Willis
Willis, Dontrelle (SP,FP) SP, DET Dontrelle Willis released to make room for Greg Smith
$13 Eveland, Dana (SP,FP) SP, TOR Out bid, winning bid $69.00
Willis, Dontrelle (SP,FP) SP, DET No longer on active roster.
$4 Maholm, Paul (SP,FP) SP, PIT Out bid, winning bid $47.00
Willis, Dontrelle (SP,FP) SP, DET No longer on active roster.

This team is short good arms. That's why I picked up Medlan. I think he is going to be a tough carry for this team. Greg Smith gave me a below average starts with no win and 1 K. It looks like he will be a free agent next week.

WCFB Report Week 1

Posted by CC's Desperados, Apr 12 2010, 12:43 PM

With week one is in the book of the WCFB, here are my pickups in my three leagues:

League 9-

CC's Desperados
$172 Snyder, Chris (C,U) C, ARI Out bid, winning bid $225.00
Blalock, Hank (C,U) DH, TEX No longer on active roster.
$32 Teagarden, Taylor (C,U) C, TEX Out bid, winning bid $40.00
Blalock, Hank (C,U) DH, TEX No longer on active roster.
$21 Leake, Mike (SP,FP) SP, CIN Out bid, winning bid $61.00
Duke, Zach (SP,FP) SP, PIT No longer on active roster.
$17 Hundley, Nick (C,U) C, SD Player awarded. Released: Hank Blalock
Blalock, Hank (C,U) DH, TEX Hank Blalock released to make room for Nick Hundley
$17 Willis, Dontrelle (SP,FP) SP, DET Player awarded. Released: Zach Duke
Duke, Zach (SP,FP) SP, PIT Zach Duke released to make room for Dontrelle Willis
$15 Bush, David (SP,FP) SP, MIL Out bid, winning bid $44.00
Duke, Zach (SP,FP) SP, PIT No longer on active roster.
$9 Garcia, Freddy (SP,FP) SP, CWS Out bid, winning bid $89.00
Duke, Zach (SP,FP) SP, PIT No longer on active roster.
$3 Johnson, Rob (C,U) C, SEA Team at roster limit.
Blalock, Hank (C,U) DH, TEX Could not release, not currently on roster.
$3 Romo, Sergio (RP,FP) RP, SF Player awarded. Released: Jeremy Hermida
Hermida, Jeremy (RP,FP) RF, BOS Jeremy Hermida released to make room for Sergio Romo
$2 Lewis, Jensen (RP,FP) RP, CLE Player awarded. Released: Trevor Cahill
Hermida, Jeremy (RP,FP) RF, BOS Could not release, not currently on roster.
Cahill, Trevor (RP,FP) SP, OAK Trevor Cahill released to make room for Jensen Lewis

After the first waiver period was over, Nick Hundley looks to be a better buy than Chris Snyder. With Montero being out for anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks, a solid short spurt is what I might need. Sometimes you win by losing some of these free agent battles. In this case, I won after the first week. My second move was to cut Zack Duke. I won Dontrele Willis, but he pitched worse than Zack Duke for the week but neither player won their start. I picked Jenson Lewis as some short term insurance for Chris Perez. I think he pitched one inning, but he got a win.

League-2

CC's Desperados
$37 Gorzelanny, Tom (SP,FP) SP, CHC Out bid, winning bid $46.00
Blalock, Hank (SP,FP) DH, TEX No longer on active roster.
$21 Leake, Mike (SP,FP) SP, CIN Out bid, winning bid $114.00
Blalock, Hank (SP,FP) DH, TEX No longer on active roster.
$15 Bush, David (SP,FP) SP, MIL Player awarded. Released: Hank Blalock
Blalock, Hank (SP,FP) DH, TEX Hank Blalock released to make room for David Bush
$9 Garcia, Freddy (SP,FP) SP, CWS Out bid, winning bid $67.00
Blalock, Hank (SP,FP) DH, TEX No longer on active roster.
$7 Mejia, Jenrry (SP,FP) SP, NYM Out bid, winning bid $22.00
Young, Eric (SP,FP) 2B, COL No longer on active roster.
$3 Aceves, Alfredo (RP,FP) RP, NYY Player awarded. Released: Eric Young
Young, Eric (RP,FP) 2B, COL Eric Young released to make room for Alfredo Aceves

I pickup David Bush for short money. He pitched ok and he should be a servicable pitcher for my bench. I missed on Jenrry Mejia who I would have use for part of the week. I was really surprises to see he went for $22. He looks like a decent play when you don't have enough starters for half the week. I didn't use Alfredo Aceves and he pitched poorly. I think he might make lore sense on another one of my teams. I just can't get him in my lineup how the team is structured.

League 6-

CC's Desperados
$177 Snyder, Chris (C,U) C, ARI Out bid, winning bid $250.00
Moore, Adam (C,U) C, SEA Did not need to be released.
$37 Johnson, Jim (RP,FP) RP, BAL Out bid, winning bid $55.00
League, Brandon (RP,FP) RP, SEA No longer on active roster.
$6 Lewis, Jensen (RP,FP) RP, CLE Player awarded. Released: Brandon League
League, Brandon (RP,FP) RP, SEA Brandon League released to make room for Jensen Lewis

In this league, the Snyder bid was a semi block/need. It looks like the Jim Johnson bid will be a good buy. I kind of wish I bid a little higher. I might have catch break in week two when Feliz took over the closing duties in Texas. Lewis was the same insurance for Perez and he picked up a win for me. Wood could be back soon, but I bet gets hurt again.

WSJ

Posted by CC's Desperados, Apr 3 2010, 01:17 PM

The baseball season is about to begin. I thought was interesting to see my name pop up in the Wall Street Journal Online. Maybe I'm getting the Sports Illustrated curse for fantasy baseball. Here's the link and the article:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405...1962104870.html

By NANDO DIFINO

My World Series is in late March. In fact, there are about 10 of them, all at once. The World Championship of Fantasy Baseball, the League of Alternate Baseball Reality and Tout Wars all draft or have their auctions in late March. Then there are the home leagues I join with friends and college buddies and the casual advisory roles I take for pals looking to have an extra set of eyes on their team. This year, I sat in on three drafts where I wasn't even playing.
[fantasy0403] Michele Monteleone for The Wall Street Journal

A participant in the New York wing of the National Fantasy Baseball Championship ponders his options.

People ask how many leagues I'm in. Last year it was 14, this year 12. Many involve some of fantasy's great minds. But 2010 was the first year I dared participate in the National Fantasy Baseball Championship.

The NFBC is where the best of the best come to play. It takes place in five cities — St. Louis, Chicago, New York, Atlantic City and Las Vegas — over the course of two weekends. There's no qualifying event one must win in order to partake. You just have to be willing to open your pocket. Most participants pay $1,250 to enter, with cash prizes awarded to the individual league winners and a six-figure grand prize to a winner among all 435 participants in what's called the Main Event.

I set up at the NFBC draft Saturday at Caesar's Club at the Mets' Citi Field. The club had seven sets of 15 teams, each drafting in the one room overlooking the stadium's parking lot. Sprinkled throughout were some of the nation's most well-known fantasy experts: Ron Shandler, Cory Schwartz, Mike Siano, Todd Zola, Lawr Michaels and J.P. Kastner among them. The competition here was tough, but I was only playing for charity. I feared more for my friends participating at the same time in Las Vegas.

About a week before the draft, all NFBC players are e-mailed a list of their competitors and their randomized draft order. In the process of pre-draft preparation, my friends had e-mailed anything and everything related to the big day to me — ranking lists, expert analysis, mock drafts, and strategy related to the NFBC's no-trades policy (to prevent collusion). Two weeks before they were about to depart for Vegas, I received a forwarded e-mail with the draft order and leaguemates for their entry, Team Gobots.

They were ecstatic. They hadn't pulled a recognizable fantasy expert in their league. But one name jumped out at me as scarier than any expert: Clark Olson. Dr. Olson is a Washington state-based computer scientist and professor by day, but a fantasy monster by night. He has won ESPN's Uber Challenge twice. In other words, he's twice survived a year-long death march that scores a user points in every fantasy game on ESPN.com. It's a marathon that requires knowledge of every sport and every nuance of the fantasy game. And Dr. Olson wasn't just lucky in those two years he won: He's finished in the top five for eight years in a row. He also won the grand prize as the top player in ESPN fantasy baseball in 2006. And Dr. Olson won a celebrity fantasy basketball league with his part-time partner, the rock star Meat Loaf.

Team Gobots struggled with the weight of this challenge.

"Oh," was all my friends could dejectedly muster. "Has he played NFBC, though?"

"He's won it twice." I said. "But at least you avoided the pig farmer."

"Who?"

Lindy Hinkleman, an Idaho hog farmer, won $241,300 last year after tearing through the NFBC. It couldn't have come at a better time for Mr. Hinkleman, whose farm was hemorrhaging money thanks to the swine flu epidemic sweeping the nation at the time.

"People were scared to eat pork," says Mr. Hinkleman, noting that he didn't have to kill any hogs, but lost sales due to the perception that eating pork would transmit swine flu.

The closest Mr. Hinkleman had come during a stretch of five failed tries at NFBC was a 52nd-place finish in 2007. Mr. Hinkleman says that he found success last year after reading a Q&A session on the NFBC boards with four-time winner Shawn Childs.

This is the guy who stops traffic among NFBC participants when he enters the room. Shawn Childs doesn't have a job on TV offering advice. As far as I know, he doesn't even have a Twitter account where people can ask him which two outfielders he would rather have in a group of four. He simply wins. In the last six years, Mr. Childs has won four NFBC league titles, finished third three times and fifth once in the overall Main Event standings. He has career NFBC earnings of over $100,000. The advice he gave in that message board chat that Mr. Hinkleman heeded for his big win? Make sure your top three players combine for 75 steals and 75 home runs. There were no advanced sabermetrics involved. Mr. Childs wins partly because of an approach as simple as drafting guys who are fast and/or hit home runs.

He's also in the Gobots' league. Randomly, my friends were stuck in a league with the master of every game ESPN has ever put out, plus the master of the NFBC. At least, they reasoned, they would have a few days in Vegas to sip champagne at the Wet Republic nightclub, which became a makeshift command central for last-second draft prep.

Players like Dr. Olson, Mr. Childs and Mr. Hinkleman go largely unnoticed by the majority of the fantasy-playing universe. Outside of a certain Bat Out of Hell and the nominating committee of the NFBC Hall of Fame they remain largely unknown. But they will beat you to a ruthless pulp in the high-stakes leagues of NFBC and WCOFB. And they will take your wallet.

Six months from now, a new Main Event winner will be crowned, feted and feared. For now, after a long and arduous draft season, all we drafters can do it sit, wait and revel in the fun of actually getting to play our game in a major league park.

San Francisco Giants 2010

Posted by CC's Desperados, Feb 23 2010, 08:48 AM

Outlook: The Giants are a veteran hitting ball club. Pablo Sandoval is the baby in the lineup. Their overall team structure is missing a couple of key pieces. It appears they don't have a clear cut leadoff hitter or number two hitter. Edgar Renteria is probably the player who fits best hitting 2nd, but his skills have appeared to diminish the last two years. He had surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow. With a base stealer batting leadoff, he might make sense hitting 2nd. As the team is structured now, it's a coin flip on who has the best shot of hitting 1st or 2nd. Nate Schierholtz has some talent and maybe more speed than anyone projected to start. Mark DeRosa looks like the batter with best approach at the plate. The Giants starting lineup will be a work in progress this season. A have Freddie Sanchez on the DL to start the year. He had left shoulder surgery in December. San Fran have two of the best young starters in the game. If Madison Bumgarner can join Jonathan Sanchez as a developing arm, the Giants could have one of the better starting staffs in the NL. Mark DeRosa and Aubrey Huff were the two key free agent signings this year.

Starting Lineup (02/04/10)

1-Mark DeRosa (LF)
2-Nate Schierholtz (RF)
3-Pablo Sandoval (3B)
4-Abrey Huff (1B)
5-Benji Molina ©
6-Aaron Rowand (CF)
7-Juan Uribe (2B)
8-Edgar Renteria (SS)
9-Pitcher

Hitting Bench: Eugenio Velez will be the utility player on the team. Travis Ishikawa will add depth to 1B. If Nate Schierholtz doesn't step up, John Bowker looks like he ready to make the next step. Fred Lewis is still on the roster, but he could be moved before spring training. Top catching prospect Buster Posey will probably start the year at AAA with the resigning of Benji Molina. Eli Whiteside looks like the backup C to start the year.

Starting Rotation:

1-Tim Lincecum
2-Matt Cain
3-Jonathan Sanchez
4-Barry Zito
5-Madison Bumgarner

Other Options: Kevin Pucetas, Steve Johnson, Henry Sosa

Tim Lincecum improved on his command. He was tougher to hit, but his strikeouts didn't have another spike upward. He had some back spasms late in the year. He had a little incent with possession of marijuana. Lincecum will be the first pitcher drafted this year in most leagues. Matt Cain had some growth in command. In the past he has pitched well, but he hasn't won games. Last year he won some games. Jonathan Sanchez pitched great in the second half of 2009 (3.37 era and 1.10 whip). He's always been tough to hit, but the walks have did him in. He will be one of the hot players in 2010 based on his growth in the second half of 2009. He has some history of injuries. Barry Zito gave the Giants something for their investment last year. He isn't a dead end as a back end starter, but he should be clicking his heels every time he steps on the mound. The Giants don't have many options if Madison Bumgarner doesn't handle the step to the majors. Bumgarner's command and dominace declined last season at AA. There was a report of lost velocity in midsummer. He's a nice arm, but he will be 20 when the season starts.

Closer:

1-Brian Wilson
2-Sergio Romo
3-Dan Runzler

Brian Wilson pitched very well last season. He will be a solid option as a fantasy closer this year. The Giants will play a lot of close games this season. Sergio Romo missed the first two months of last season. He looked a 100% when he returned. He should be the first option if Brian Wilson has a problem. Dan Runzler struck out 83 batters in 59 innings last season. He's a lefty, but he has some closing experience in the minors.

San Diego Padres 2010

Posted by CC's Desperados, Feb 22 2010, 06:56 AM

Outlook: I spent last summer in San Diego. I remember sitting in the stands behind home plate. There was a lady sitting behind me that was so excited about Tony Gwynn Jr. and David Eckstein being on the team. I told her both players were stiffs and the Padres were wasting time putting them in their lineup. They were better off giving at bat to younger players and let them develop at the major league level. She gave me the old story of we only have a $35 million dollar payroll and we can't compete with the big boys with deep pockets. I pretty much told her that was horseshit. I thought the Padres had some nice young players and I liked some of their midsummer trades. I thought they had some key pieces and they were an improving team. We had some fun banter back and forth, but she kept beating me over my head with her program every time Gwynn and Eckstein got a hit. Of course I went to one of the highest scoring games of the year. Coming from Boston, I was really surprised the San Diego fans were happy to have two below average major leaguers on their team.

So when I'm looking at this year's Padre team, I'm putting Eckstein and Gwynn on the bench where they belong. San Diego has a stud in Adrian Gonzalez. They have three players with upside in Everth Cabrera, Chase Headley, and Kyle Blanks. I think both Hairstons, Venable, and Hundley are serviceable pieces. San Diego reacquired Scott Hairston in a trade with Oakland. OF prospect Aaron Cunningham was included in the deal. The Padres signed free agent Jerry Hairston. I think he is a better option at 2B. San Diego signed SP Jon Garland. Chris Young had surgery on his right shoulder last August.

The Padres signed Yorvit Torrealba. He will split time with Nick Hundley at C.

Starting Lineup (02/07/10)

1-Everth Cabrera (SS)
2-Jerry Hairston (2B)
3-Kyle Blanks (LF)
4-Adrian Gonzalez (1B)
5-Scott Hairston (CF)
6-Chase Headley (3B)
7-Will Venable (RF)
8-Nick Hundley ©
9-Pitcher

Hitting Bench: I have David Eckstein as the utility infielder. He will most likely share at bats with Hairston. Tony Gwynn should be the utility outfielder. Aaron Cunningham has a good chance to make the team and share at bats with Will Venable. Dusty Ryan looks like the backup C.

Starting Rotation:

1-Kevin Correia
2-Jon Garland
3-Chris Young
4-Mat Latos
5-Clayton Richard

Other Options: Tim Stauffer, Wade LeBlanc, Sean Gallagher, Will Inman, Aaron Poreda, Cesar Carrillo

The Padres are loaded with mediocre pitchers, but they have some depth. Their future starting staff will include Mat Latos, Sean Gallagher, and Aaron Poreda. When those three pitchers are major league ready, the Padres will need their best offensive team in place. Kevin Correia is a decent arm coming off a good season. If he can have a good start to 2010, he is a player I see San Diego moving midseason. Jon Garland will be an inning eater for San Diego. He will be playable this season when he pitches at home. Chris Young is coming off shoulder surgery. He had a frayed labrum shaved to relieve soreness. If that doesn't give you the willies! I don't have a lot of confidence in him this year. He is discounted in the early drafts so you can't ignore him if he looks ok in spring training. Mat Latos has the making of a very good major league pitcher. He might have some growing pains as he skipped AAA. Clayton Richard doesn't have the talent of a Sean Gallagher, but he had some late success in San Diego. He might get the first shot, but he will be on a short leash.

Closer:

1-Heath Bell
2-Luke Gregerson
3-Mike Adams

Heath Bell was the late closer to own last year. He pitches for a bad team, but he will be solid option again this year. Luke Gregerson has closed in the minors. He strikeout numbers are catching the eye of fantasy owners, but he still needs some work on his command. Mike Adams looks like a magician. He had shoulder surgery in October of 2008 after his breakout season in the majors. He returns midseason and he is unhittable with a great BB:K rate. He did have one DL stint after being reinstated.

Los Angelos Dodgers 2010

Posted by CC's Desperados, Feb 21 2010, 09:20 AM

Outlook: The Dodgers have a rising super star in Matt Kemp. Last year Joe Torre didn't have a lot of faith in Kemp as he was batting way down the Dodgers lineup early in the year. For Kemp to be a 1st round selection this season, he really needs to hit in the top of LA's lineup. Los Angelos will score runs. James Loney and Andre Ethier are professional bats that haven't peaked yet. The Russell Martin decline last season is a concern. You hope steroids weren't the reason for his success in the past. Manny Ramirez's suspension last season has depressed his value this season. With Orlando Hudson leaving town, Ronnie Belliard resigned with LA. He will compete with Blake Dewitt for the 2B job. The Dodgers resigned Vincent Padilla. Jamey Carroll was added for infield depth. In looks like LA will sign Reed Johnson.

There were no real changes here. I just thought it made more sense to bat James Loney 2nd. Loney can run for a first baseman. He takes walks. Until his power develops, the Dodgers should take advantage of his on base skills. Kemp has more power and speed, but he lacks the plate displine at this point in his career. He will be the number three hitter in the near future, but it probably won't happen with Manny Ramirez on the team.

Starting Lineup (02/21/10)

1-Rafael Furcal (SS)
2-James Loney (1B)
3-Andre Ethier (RF)
4-Manny Ramirez (LF)
5-Matt Kemp (CF)
6-Russell Martin ©
7-Casey Blake (3B)
8-Ronnie Belliard (2B)
9-Pitcher

Hitting Bench: Brad Ausmus will be the backup C. Jamey Carroll will be the utility infielder. The MLB site is showing Reed Johnson on the roster. He will be the 4th outfielder. Jason Repko could make the team as a utility OF. The loser of the Blake Dewitt/Ronnie Belliard battle will be the first infield option off the bench. Chin-Lung Hu has a chance to make the team. If Rafael Furcal has any problems, Hu will be the starting SS.

Starting Rotation:

1-Chad Billingsley
2-Clayton Kershaw
3-Hiroki Kuroda
4-Vincent Padilla
5-James McDonald

Other Options: Scott Elbert, Eric Stults, Charlie Haeger, Josh Lindblom, Aaron Miller

Chad Billingsley took a step backwards last season. Maybe it was a result of his off season leg injury. It would be tough for him to be an ace of a fantasy staff given his walk rate. He has talent and he should improve on last season's numbers this year. Clayton Kershaw was one of toughest pitchers to hit last year. He held opposing batters under a .200 BA for the season. His next step would be shaving a few walks off his total. If he improves in that area, he will be an elite pitcher going forward. Hiroki Kuroda battled various injuries last season. He has good command. The Dodgers blew multiple games for him last year. With increase innings, he will post solid numbers across the board. Vincent Padilla's numbers don't look pretty, but the move to LA last season can only help him going forward. James McDonald struggled with his command last season. He should have the first shot at the 5th starting job.

Closer:

1-Jonathan Broxton
2-George Sherrill
3-Ramon Troncoso

Jonathan Broxton had a monster season. The triple digit strikeouts will make him the number one closer going into 2010. With better command, he might be even better this year. George Sherrill was traded mid season. He pitched very well last year and he will be the first in line to close in LA if Broxton has a problem. Ramon Troncoso emerged as the next best right handed option in the bullpen.
