Football is back!

God it was great to see football back on TV tonight!! This is the best time of year to watch out for sleepers. I always struggle with whether or not I want my sleepers to do well during pre-season.
On one hand I want the player to do well but if he does I worry that others will be on to him. And if he does poorly I worry that I could be wrong about him. So hopefully all my sleepers will do well on the first drive and then won't play the rest of the games. I think that is the best case scenario.
Brett Farve. Not sure what else to say. This whole situation is horrible. I feel for Brett but think that the Packers are being put in a terrible situation. The latest news on this saga is that Brett is going to be given an opportunity to win the starting job…hmmm. Not sure how much I believe this. Is this a ploy to get more from a potential trade partner? Say in their division (wearing purple?). Or is it something they are saying to keep the peace for now?
If they do give him the opportunity to beat out Rodgers I think that it will be awful. All along they have stood by Rodgers, who is a free agent after next year….Would you sign back with a club that puts its confidence in you…then takes it back.
That being said this is ruining one of my minor sleepers ….Rodgers. Maybe that is why I want Farve to move on. It seems like right now many people are down on Rodgers. Maybe this is because of the Farve situation but Rodgers can be found in the 11th round of most drafts. Not sure what everyone else sees but he is setup for success (assuming he is the starter) with great receiving threats and the ability to run the ball. In his one game against Dallas last year he passed for 201yds / 1TD while running 5times for 30 yards. He could be a stud if given the chance and can be had extremely late for his potential.

Random Thoughts about the old times/"Fantasy Man Crushes":

While I was working on my bio for our site (http://www.wcofs.com/site/tnt) I started to think about how far I have come in the fantasy world. I wonder how many people get this game right away? In my experience it seems like everyone has some sort of weakness. You know, that guy who is the homer who picks Tom Brady with the 1st pick because he is a huge Patriots fan. Or the huge Boston College fan who selects Matt Ryan as his starting QB or in years past RB Willie Green. Can you tell we are from MA...
No, I was never that guy. Though I do really enjoy having my favorite teams players I have never been one to get caught up on drafting Patriots. Too bad as last year it would have worked out great for us. Instead I was one who fell in "love" with players. Guys like Fred Taylor, Drew Bledsoe they would always be on my team....ok so maybe I was a little bit of a homer after all!
I used to select guys that I like to root for and every year ended up saying if only.... he didn't get hurt...blah blah blah.
I think everyone has their "guy". And Taylor was certainly mine. I think there is always one thing that happens and then a player officially becomes your guy. That moment, the one where my "fantasy man crush" started on Taylor was in a 2000 week 12 Sunday night game against the Steelers. I remember it like yesterday, pretty sad...I know. I was losing by a bunch to one of my best friends/rival. We decided to watch the game together and I knew it was over...we joked that if Taylor ran for 4 TDS and 225 yards (against a Stud Steelers Defense) I might have a shot.
Well that is just what Freddie T (as I call him) did. On 30 carries he rushed for 234 yards 3 tds and added a receiving TD and carried me to a win. I knew right then that Fred Taylor would be mine forever....or until he got hurt for what seemed 10 straight years... ...
Regardless of how many times I told myself, Taylor is not safe I still ended up calling his name on draft day. The first year I did not select him (I won that league) Taylor ended up having a great season...staying healthy. So I guess the split worked for both of us. Surprisingly the only other team he was ever on of mine won a league championship in the WCOFF. (06) When I came home from the draft I told everyone my team and would try to sneak in his name...... it was like trying to hide that I was getting back with an EX...lol
Thinking about that huge game makes me think about how far fantasy football has come. Back then we only kept track of yards and TDs. No decimal point scoring. If your player rushed for 99 yards you got 5points and if he ran for 100 he got 10. Back then it seemed right but how lame was that scoring system? That week Taylor scored 45 pts. In the current WCOFF scoring system he would score 51.8pts. It used to drive me nuts when guys would rush for 149 yards with no TDS and catch 4 balls for 24 yards and only score 11pts. While a guy like Mike Alstott would have 2 carries for 2 yards and 2 TDs and score 12pts. It made fantasy football more about luck then skill. Thank God for these new rules! I find it funny that some leagues are still playing by those rules....I don't have to worry about offending those people as they are still carving their fantasy football scores on stones and have never heard about the internet....
That reminds me. If you are new to fantasy football or looking for a fresh drafting strategy visit our site with our "How to draft a WCOFF League Champion" article.
